This selection comes from Bette Buna, a family-run project rooted in the southern highlands of Ethiopia. Founded by Dawit and Hester in 2020, the company began as a continuation of Dawit’s family legacy—his grandparents farmed coffee in Tefari Kela, Sidama for nearly a century. Today, Bette Buna operates across several of Ethiopia’s iconic growing regions and maintains direct relationships with farmers who share their commitment to quality and equity in coffee production.
This lot, part of our Exotic Select series, was grown on Bette Buna’s own farm in the Megadu woreda of Guji, where coffee is cultivated under forest cover across 220 hectares of wild and semi-forested land. The scale of the operation is matched by its care: nearly 850 seasonal workers return each year, and Bette Buna provides transportation, housing, meals, and educational support for families during the harvest.
The coffee underwent a natural anaerobic fermentation. Whole cherries were sealed in tanks to ferment in a low-oxygen environment before being dried slowly on ceramic patios and raised beds inside a solar dryer. The result is striking—layered, expressive, and deeply structured. A reflection of the environment it comes from and the people who brought it to life.
