The station sits between four hills, Mabono, Namesti, Itimbwa, and Bukalasi, and gives farmers in these isolated communities a nearby place to sell ripe coffee cherries. Because selling cherry is still a relatively new practice for many farmers on Mount Elgon, Mountain Harvest’s micro-washing stations also serve as places for education and demonstration. Farmers and young people can see new approaches to coffee processing happening within their own communities.\n\nAt the center of Mabono Station is Processing Manager Uthman Muluwa. Uthman began working with Mountain Harvest as a casual laborer, carrying coffee through different stages of production. Whenever he had downtime, he found his way to the processing station and began learning the work out of genuine interest. By the following season, he had become a Processing Assistant, and within two years he was leading the processing team at Mabono. His story reflects one of the reasons we are excited to work with Mountain Harvest. Like Futura, they believe that meaningful change begins with investing in people, building lasting producer relationships, and supporting agricultural systems that can remain healthy and productive into the future. Their work in regenerative agriculture, farmer education, and professional development closely aligns with the kind of coffee partnerships we want to support.\n\nFor this lot, Uthman and his team selected ripe red cherries, floated them for quality, and removed the fruit while leaving the coffee’s sticky mucilage intact. The coffee was then dried on raised beds until it reached 11% moisture before resting in a temperature-controlled warehouse.
